Over 350 projects in 29 European countries have been awarded 70 of the 150 million euros of The Digital News Initiative (DNI) Innovation Fund, which aims to empower journalism through technology. Applications for the fourth round of Google’s contest are open until October 12.

The DNI was created in 2015 as a partnership between Google and news publishers in Europe to support high quality journalism, by funding products and tools that demonstrate new thinking in the practice of digital journalism. This fourth round comes with an update: there is a mandatory monetisation theme, with all medium and large projects having to reveal their potential for creating economic value and their strategies for doing so.

Project prototypes can apply for 50,000 euros, and medium and large projects for 300,000 and up to 1 million euros, respectively. All projects will be evaluated by their impact, innovation and feasibility.

More than 100 initiatives were funded in the third round. Among these initiatives is the prototype The Open State Foundation, from The Netherlands, which is seeking to increase transparency and give journalists access to political information. Publico.es, from Spain, has created a Transparent Journalism Tool that enables readers to go behind the scenes of the newspaper’s editorial process, while the German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle has developed a platform which translates video and audio content into 30 languages, for over 135 million listeners worldwide.
