The hype grows as the gadget comes closer to being commercialised early next year. The virtual reality headset Oculus Rift was developed by Palmer Luckey (17 when he created it and now 22 years old), using the crowd-funding platform Kickstarter. Facebook then bought it in spring 2014. ‘Vanity Fair’ tells how the awkward object convinced Mark Zuckerberg to invest $2 billion in Luckey’s startup – and why it will convert us into believers, too.

This is the future,’ Zuckerberg thought the first he put the headset on, ‘Vanity’ reports. Removing it, he added, ‘Wow! That was pretty awesome.’ The Facebook CEO believes he has found the next immersive, 3-D experience.
