The top 6 most innovative universities are American, according to Reuters’ ranking of the World’s Most Innovative Universities. Forty-six US institutions feature in the top 100, with Stanford University holding pole position for the fourth consecutive year.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Washington and the University of Texas System lead the 2018 ranking. At no.7, KU Leuven in Belgium is the highest ranked outside the US, followed by Imperial College London (8), the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (9) and Vanderbilt University (10).
Beyond the US
According to the ranking, which identifies the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies, and power new markets and industries, German universities are gaining more than any other European country, with two new universities on the list.
Although the results show that uncertainty over Brexit may be pushing research out of the UK, the University of Manchester was the biggest mover on the list, jumping from no.80 last year to no.53. This is credited to its research into the supermaterial graphene – the UK city is home to the National Graphene Institute.
In Asia, due to a new government push for innovation and a focus on filing more patent applications, Chinese universities are also showing an increasing presence among the top 100. No institutions in Africa, South America or Oceania were listed.
